
STAR Foundations is a weekend-long training in key concepts of Strategies for Trauma Awareness and Resilience.
What is Trauma?
TRAUMA is the emotional and physical harm that can result from violent conflict, natural disasters, oppressive societal structures, or other kinds of painful experiences that overwhelm a person’s or group’s ability to cope.
What is STAR?
STAR (Strategies for Trauma Awareness and Resilience) is a research supported approach to addressing trauma and building resilience for individuals and groups who have experienced trauma, and/or are working with trauma-impacted people. (http://www.emu.edu/star).
Offered in a shorter time frame, STAR FOUNDATIONS introduces participants to some of the key concepts of the 4 1/2 day STAR training, including:

- an understanding of trauma and the types of trauma
- the ways that the body and brain respond to trauma
- the ways that unhealed trauma can create cycles of violence
- ways to break free, heal and create resilience

About the facilitator:
Tina Schlabach is co-pastor of Shalom Mennonite Fellowship, Tucson, Arizona. She has completed Levels 1 and 2 of STAR trainings, and has co-led STAR trainings in Reedley, Los Angeles, and Oakland, CA. Tina is also an advanced practitioner of Capacitar practices for the healing and wellbeing of body, mind, and spirit. Training in STAR has helped Tina to offer trauma-informed care to persons in the congregation and community.
